Thor
Up early again! I’d slept well enough but awoke soon after sunrise and then started worrying about all manner of things. I needed to see Daniel again, though his avoidance was now bordering on disappearance, or find some other way of breaking his spell. Kennefick was hopefully gone – and good riddance – but who knew where he would next appear. Then there was Catherine. What in Heaven and Hell am I doing there? Wasn’t there something else…oh yes; getting married in five days’ time.
For a while I had watched Giulia quietly, observing her breathe and wondered if she was dreaming. I hadn’t wanted to wake her though and the frustration, the utter frustration of loving her but strangely not desperately wanting her body on mine, was more than I could lie there and bear.
I got dressed in jeans and riding boots, packed a knife into one of them and tucked my revolver into my waistband. Then I went down to the stables.
“Good morning,” I said to the man working there. “You’re George, aren’t you? George Simon Smith.”
The stableman put down the buckets he was carrying. “Ay. It’s Smithy, Ma’am. Least that’s what everyone calls me. And good morning to you Ma’am.”
“Sapphira,” I said, “We’re with the horses and they don’t care for titles.” I looked at him.
He raised his eyebrow in surprise. “I’m not sure if I can do that Ma’am. I was raised not to be familiar with my betters. Hope you don’t mind ... do you know everybody’s name here?”
“Yes, I really think I probably do. I seem to be getting good with names.”
I walked along the stalls.
“Thinking of riding Ms? Uhh … Ma’am ... Sapphira.”
I smiled. “Yes. I was hoping to take Thor out for a trot.”
Smithy pulled in his breath and tilted his head. “He’ll be up for it,” he said. “I usually take him out myself just once or twice a week to keep him saddle wise. He’s a bit of a devil mind. Always wants to jump and he’s got this mean trick for unseating his rider. Done me a couple of times.”
I laughed. “Really? Well he’d better not try that on me.”
“Just be sure now, young Sapphira. He’s a big ‘un; big for his breed and powerful too. Your father had him sent to us as a two year old and specifically asked us not to geld him. Said he reminded him of the horses he had back home. Anyway, the result is this big, lively fella. He’s full of heart but never yet let anybody properly boss him.”
“So Paul liked him spirited, did he? Let’s see how we get on.”
“By yourself are you? Well, alright but you’re going to wear a helmet this time. I should have insisted the other day, your friend being a novice and all. But then Ben and Alice wouldn’t drop you for anything. Thor though; he’ll drop you, stamp on you and spit on what’s left.”
“Will he now?”
“Oh, ay. I’ll tell you his story. He was born in a thunderstorm - that’s how he got his name - and his mother died just days later.
